Can I get books for Kindle anywhere or do I have to purchase them from Amazon?

Question by Quintessence©: Can I buy books for Kindle anyplace or do I have to buy them from Amazon? Just received a Kindle. Could I buy, for example, an e-book from Barnes and Noble and read it on my Kindle, or would they be incompatible? Do I have to buy my books from Amazon in order to use them on the Kindle? Not Barnes and Noble but you can purchase books from smashwords.com or get totally free books from Project Gutenberg and down load by way of your laptop or computer but if you want Amazon to store the book you may have to buy from Amazon Kindle reads a number of ebook formats which includes pdf
